My first and only running race is in the books for 2014 - the DC Rock n’ Roll Half Marathon. I invested time preparing a strategy for this race. I ran this race last year in 1:52 and my goal was to join sub-1:50 club. I knew that based on the elevation profile of this race that I’d have to put some time in the bank on the first half to compensate for the hill at mile 7 and the rollers on the back half. There was no way I was making up any time on the back end!
My goal was 8:00 min miles for miles 1-6, a 9:00 mile for mile 7, and 8:21’s for the rest. I knew it was unlikely that I would run a 1:45 so I couldn’t rely on a pace group so it was me and my Garmin.
I executed my plan and did a little better through mile 7. Then right on plan through mile 11. Miles 12 and 13.1 were rough and I hung on! Success: 1:49:00!
Now back to Ironman training. It’s going to a rough 3:30 hours on the bike today!
